Firm History

Jerry Marger and Alex Johnson founded the patent law firm Marger & Johnson in 1986. At the time, there were only three established patent law firms in the Portland area. Marger and Johnson’s vision was to build the premiere west coast intellectual property law firm by staying on the cutting edge of law trends, being a solid partner and a valuable resource to clients, and by treating all staff members as integral to their collective success. Marger & Johnson would be a leader in IP law, with a focus on patents, trademarks, copyrights, licensing, and litigation, and began to make its mark with only four employees.

Renamed Marger Johnson & McCollom in 1998, and more recently shortened to Marger Johnson in 2015, the firm now has nine lawyers and an overall staff of 20 employees. As we have grown in size and stature, we have found success in keeping close the notion that we will meet our clients’ needs in every phase of the IP process—from concept to inception and from protection to enforcement—making sure that the experience for them is rewarding, straightforward and painless.
